GET TO KNOW SOUTH AFRICAN (DURBAN) MUSIC

'Future Sound of Mzansi' is Spoek Mathambo and Lebogang Rasethaba's powerful new documentary about South African electronic music. Part one introduces the new sounds coming out of the townships and urban areas of cities like Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. It becomes abundantly clear that regionalism is extremely important in the development of genres like broken beats, qgom, Shangaan electro, and kwaito. Or, as a producer puts it, it's about the need to "own our shit, own who we are, then bring that out to the world."

We also get to meet the film's colorful cast of characters, which includes Black Coffee, Okmalumkoolkat, Culoe De Song, the owners of Cape Town record label African Dope, and broken beats originators NakedBoys, among many others. The producers discuss the ways the Internet has both helped and hurt their scenes, while dancers show off the sneaker-shredding moves that bring the music to life.

One of this segment's most powerful moments comes from Nozinja, who delivers a passionate speech about using Shangaan electro—the genre he pretty much created—to represent the marginalized Shangaan people. "For me to be known and seen all over, representing that same marginalized and abused nation, I feel proud," he says, eyes twinkling. That same pride resonates with everyone else in the film.

Starting on May 20, Future Sound of Mzansi is premiering over three episodes on THUMP—check back for parts two and three.

Nicky Romero Has His Own Video Game & It’s Actually Super Addictive

One of the best progressive house DJ/producers in the game and head of Protocol Recordings, Nicky Romero now has his own video game as well. A simple platform that follows his rather exciting journey to a DJ performance, it’s as cheesy as it sounds – and although it’s a promotional campaign for DJ Mag’s detested Top 100 poll – I can’t stop playing it myself.
Even better is the incorporation of a “Global Score” which, when reached, will unlock the official 8-bit release of Romero’s most famous anthem, “Toulouse,” for free download. So get jumping and sliding, fellow dance music and video game enthusiasts… This is a lot more enjoyable than it might initially appear.

Justin Bieber Says New Album Will Sound Like “Where Are Ü Now” Thanks To Skrillex

In a new interview with Ryan Seacrest, Justin Bieber announced that he would not only be releasing a new single on August 28th entitled “What Do You Mean,” but also that this track, and the rest of his album, would land in the same vein as “Where Are Ü Now” – the hybrid EDM/pop tune that has been making serious waves.

The album will feature heavy production help from half of the Jack Ü duo, the well-loved king of American EDM, Sonny Moore aka Skrillex. The two seemingly can’t get over each other, though, showing an absolute outpouring of support for one another in various interviews. But this latest word from the baby-faced pop idol hints at more production help from Skrillex than initially expected.

“Skrillex is a genius, he’s super futuristic and I just love his sound, so being able to incorporate that sound with what I’m doing has been super cool because it’s new and fresh and I feel like no one’s done it before.”

In the meantime, check out the self-titled Jack Ü album below… it seems that it will serve as a very good preview for what Bieber & Skrill’s new collaborative efforts might sounds like.

Skrillex Turns The Tables On Paparazzi, Interviews Him Instead

I’m sure that Skrillex has faced his fair share of paparazzi by now – as one of the world’s most well-known and recognizable producer/DJs, his face has become synonymous with the rise of commercial EDM (at least to some). So it’s definitely not outside the realm of possibility for Sonny to be approached on the street by someone from, let’s sayTMZ.

This time was different though. Sonny’s quick wit turned the tables on Cody the cameraman and, instead of getting asked a bunch of asinine questions, turned and interviewed Cody. The man who has probably never had that kind of reaction from a celebrity or idol or whatever was noticeably moved, saying, “Jesus, man. You made me feel, like, way really good, man.”

All it takes is a little common decency and compassion to make someone’s night, and Skrillex really seems to take that ideal to heart. Check it out below.
